Best of Multimedia: The “Big Data” Landscape

What’s really happening with the 2.5 exabytes of data created every day.

“It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information.” This famous Oscar Wilde quote is cleverly embedded in software company Elexio’s infographic, “Big Data Bigger Opportunities” (below).

Indeed, figuring out how to make hoards of data manageable and useful is still on the 2014 agenda for many companies and organizations—including the government, sports teams, and even the fashion industry. Not surprisingly, it’s also on the minds of our readers: s+b blogger Ken Favaro recently announced “big data strategy” as the winner of s b’s Strategy of the Year

This particular infographic is full of interesting stats and tidbits about big data, from outlining the sheer volume of information (“2.5 exabytes [of data] are created daily”) to providing concrete examples of how it’s being used in the banking and retail sectors (analysts tapping into parking lot location data to predict Black Friday sales at Macy’s). It’s almost more than the 10–100 terabytes of available space in my brain can hold.
